Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See

This wonderful cathedral is one of the most famous ones in the world, not only because of its stunning Gothic design but also because it is the third largest cathedral in the world. The Seville Cathedral is Christopher Columbus´ burial site.

As a newly major trade center, Seville was ready to show its wealth and status and so in 1401 it was decided that the Cathedral was to be built, with the one idea of creating the greatest church the world had ever seen. Next year the building of the church started until 1506.

The work on the church was apparently over until in 1511 the dome collapsed, and work started again until, again, the dome collapsed in 1888 due to an earthquake that destroyed many precious objects that were located right below the dome and repairing work did not finish until 1903.

The cathedral has the longest nave in the country; the life of Christ can be seen from the Gothic retablo that decorates the interior of the building. Pierre Dancart dedicated his life to the creation of the altarpiece.

It is believed that around five-hundred masses would take place daily in the 80 chapels that are found within the cathedral.
