Torre del Oro (The Golden Tower)

The Golden Tower is a military watchtower built in the 13th century by the Almohad dynasty with the one purpose of controlling the entrance to the city through the Guadalquivir River. It served as both, a prison and a store for precious metals: it is because of this latest function that many think the tower gained its name.

It served as a control and a blockage, together with another anchor point that is believed to have disappeared during the 1755 Earthquake. The third level of the tower was built in 1760.

The tower has survived and been remodeled to become a naval museum that emphasizes on the importance of the river and the history of the city.
