The Museum of Fine Arts of Sevilla

As far as national painting exhibition is concerned, the Museum of Fine Arts of Sevilla (Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla) is the second most important one in Spain and the most important one in Andalucía.

It was created in 1835 and first opened to the public in 1841, the building that homes the museum was initially built as an abbey, Convento de la Merced, and its current looks are the result of important remodeling that took place from 1603 to 1612. It went through another three remodeling stages since it was opened as a museum.

It is located in the Plaza del Museo (Museum Plaza), and it mainly offers a wide exposition on Baroque painting from Sevilla (Murillo, Valdés Leal and Zurbarán).

Its collection was made up of paintings from monasteries and abbeys, being mainly religious art, and starting the 20th century its collection grew due to donations from collectors.
